Quartz glass has particularly good light transmission across the entire wavelength spectrum. In the infrared region (except for special infrared glass), its spectral transmission range is larger than that of ordinary glass. In the visible light region, the transmittance reaches93%. In the ultraviolet spectral region, especially in the short-wave ultraviolet spectrum, its transmittance is much better than other glasses. The optical performance of quartz glass largely depends on its chemical purity. Even0.001%of impurities can significantly affect product quality. Transition metal impurities can shift the wavelength, and the presence of hydroxyl groups absorbs the2.73μmmlight band. Domestic optical quartz glass comes in three grades:JGS1ultraviolet optical quartz glass, application range185-2000nm, made from synthetic stone, usingSicl₄as raw material;JGS2ultraviolet optical quartz glass, application range220-2500nm, made from crystal, produced by gas melting;JGS3infrared optical quartz glass, application range260-3500nm, made from crystal or high-purity quartz sand, produced in a vacuum pressurized furnace. There is also a full-spectrum optical quartz glass abroad, application range180-4000nm, produced by plasma chemical vapor deposition (without water orH2). Using ultra-pureSicl4as raw material. Doping quartz glass with a small amount ofTio2can filter out ultraviolet light below220nm, known as ozone-free quartz glass. Because ultraviolet light below220nmcan turn oxygen in the air into ozone. Doping quartz glass with small amounts of titanium, europium, and other elements can filter out short waves below340nm. Using it to make electric light sources has a health benefit for human skin. This glass can be made completely bubble-free. It has excellent ultraviolet transmission performance, especially in the short-wave ultraviolet region, far surpassing all other glasses. At185μmm, the transmittance can reach85%. It is an excellent optical material for the185-2500nmwavelength range. Because this glass containsOHgroups, its infrared transmission performance is poor, especially near2.7μm, where there is a large absorption peak.
